Crickets

Have you ever thought about the location of our ears?  Human ears are located on either side of our head but a cricket’s ears are located on their front legs.  Males will make the chirping sound by rubbing their forewings against each other.  Different species of crickets have an individual sound so that they find their own species during mating.  Some males even have chirping duels where they try to sound better than the other to attract a mate!  Crickets are found all around the world but they need plant materials to eat.

You can imagine that a place where you can pick your own apples, pumpkins and potatoes would have plenty of plant materials for crickets to eat.  Liz Roth Rutter took her daughter, Sophia, and the Girl Scout troop to pick potatoes.  Instead of digging for potatoes like they should have been, Sophia and her friend were distracted by the abundance of bugs!  They identified about four different kinds of bugs including grasshoppers, crickets, earthworms and caterpillars.  As you can see, Sophia was pretty proud of her finds.  Playing with bugs sounds like more fun than digging for potatoes.
