Pop!

Well, Andy Warhol has been up for 2 weeks now.  We had a very fun opening and those who came really enjoyed themselves.  I have to say a special thanks to Mr. Wesley Cochran for joining us for a few days.  He is the collector or these pieces and was nice enough to be here for the opening and give a gallery talk.

We've had a good turnout in these 2 weeks and I'm thinking it will remain a steady stream of people throughout the run.  It's really interesting to talk to people who visit the exhibit, especially those who aren't familiar with his work.  They come in not knowing what to expect, thinking they won't even like it.  When I get the chance to talk with them I tell them that there's something for everyone in this exhibit.  Mickey Mouse is in here so I'm a happy camper.  When I talk to those same people on the way out, sure enough, "I loved the John Wayne!" or "Superman was so cool".  Yep.  That's the beauty of pop art.  It's stuff that you're familiar with so there's bound to be something you like or can appreciate.

I love being able to bring something like Andy Warhol to southeastern New Mexico.  Art can be intimidating but I think we've presented it in a way that makes it accessible.  The prints are hung like an art gallery with stark black and white walls but when you get to the back and turn around you see the backs of the walls are covered in bright colors.  We have Andy Warhol quotes all over the gallery.  They are placed at different angles to kind of give it an abstract feel.  We also have some 60s/70s rock and roll playing.  At the opening someone described the show as "whimsical".  I love that description because I think it makes an intimidating subject more accessible.

We are very lucky to have this exhibit here in Hobbs.  We're only at the middle of the year but I'm so excited for the rest of this year.  We also have some VERY exciting ideas in the work for the future, so stay tuned!!
