New York City perseveres as an incredible musical melting pot reining in artistic influences from all across the globe. Accompanying the surging amalgamation of diverse genres, cultures and rhythms, NATION BEAT introduces an unprecedented mix of northeastern Brazil’s maracatu and the sounds of the deep American South. NATION BEAT artistic director/founder Scott Kettner, a graduate of The New School University (NYC) and a 2006 Latin Jazz Ambassador, is at once following the path of such Brazilian luminaries as Lenine and Chico Science, and forging new trails with a distinct, contemporary interpretation of the traditional 19th century Pernembuco-born rhythm.
At the heart of NATION BEAT’s new album, Legends of the Preacher, lies a totally original 21st century fusion between thunderous Brazilian maracatu drumming and New Orleans second line rhythms, Appalachian- inspired bluegrass music, funk, rock and country-blues. It is also at the heart of their explosive live show—which is frequently known to burst into crowd-wide Carnival-style drumming and singing—is attracting music fans from a wide demographic: bluegrass and country music fans, Brazilian music lovers, outdoor festival-goers and pretty much anyone who loves to dance and loves great music.
NATION BEAT parades with an indispensable audacious energy, and seamlessly bridges folkloric Brazilian rhythms with classic American roots music. The group is fronted by the soaring powerhouse vocalist and rising Brazilian star Liliana Araujo. The band is rounded out by a
remarkably talented, innovative and fearless group of musicians.
