Child Safety Day

Members of the Hobbs Police Department, the Hobbs Fire Department, the Lea County Sheriff’s Department and the Lea County Community Drug Coalition will be on hand for Child Safety Day at the Western Heritage Museum and Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame. The event, which is scheduled from 1—5 pm, is designed to bring awareness to families about the many resources in our community available for keeping our children safe. The law-enforcement and safety officials will provide educational materials and hands-on activities designed for safe-guarding our children.

An emergency Vehicle Exploration Station located in the front parking lot of the museum will feature the Hobbs Fire Department’s “smoke house” demonstration model, and a fire truck. Members of the Hobbs Police Department, the Lea County Sheriff’s Department, and the Lea County Drug Coalition will be on hand to answer questions and to demonstrate the crime fighting techniques used in our community. There will be door prizes and admission is FREE! “We are excited about this event,” commented Mary Lyle, Director of Education at the Western Heritage Museum. “Families can learn more about all of the resources available in our community, which will help them to safeguard their children.”

“We invite families to try their own hand at crime scene investigation by visiting our new exhibit, Crime Lab Detective.” The interactive exhibit, designed by the Museum of Discovery of Little Rock, Arkansas, and supplemented with local resources, challenges the visitors to use their problem solving skills to solve a crime. Forensic Science concepts such as the study of fingerprints, chromatographs, DNA, insect lifecycles, tire marks, hair analysis, thread comparison and handwriting analysis are all covered in their pursuit of the culprit.
