Tours

I had a wonderful experience today.  Our part time educator had jury duty today so I was asked to give the tour of our Eyes on Earth exhibit to a group of 6th graders.  Mind you, I know this exhibit but I've never had to give a tour yet so I was a little nervous to say the least.  This was a really good group of 6th graders.  Problem:  they didn't bring any parents.  Why is this a problem?  We usually split the class into groups and assign a parent to each group.  This parent, then, walks around the exhibit with the kids and are engaged in the learning process with the students.  Well, with no parents that meant that we had to improvise.  I had help from one of my coworkers and we had the teacher.  So we had 3 supervised groups and 1 on their own (who did really well, I have to say).  Anyway, I had a group of 6 students.  They were really attentive and asked some really good questions.  They even answered questions when I asked!!  There was one young man, however, who stands out in my mind.  He had recently been to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and used that experience to tie in to what he was learning here.  He asked very intelligent questions, listened to the answers, and even tried to really understand what was happening.  He commented on how we must have done a lot of research to put this exhibit together.  I told him the place we got it from did all the research but we did still have to learn about it so we could give tours.  I really enjoyed walking around the exhibit with him.  This class, in general, presented a really good dialog about satellites, planets, and space.  I love when you can really see students applying what they are learning to things they know or thought they knew.  So thank you, to the 6th grade class that visited the Museum today.  I hope many of the classes in the area will get the opportunity to visit this wonderful exhibit before it leaves May 1!
