REPORT FROM SANTA FE on Sundays at 8:00 a.m., unless pre-empted.
April 1
– This week's guest on REPORT FROM SANTA FE is archaeologist Calvin Smith,
Executive Director of the Western Heritage Museum Complex and Lea County Cowboy
Hall of Fame. Smith discusses discoveries and controversies in archaeology
today, focusing on what he feels is probably the most historically important
archaeological site in North America, the Folsom site in New Mexico.
It was at Folsom that
early scientists excavated the “Folsom Point,” a unique spearhead that provided
dependable evidence of human artifacts in the Pleistocene in America, and dated
man's activity in that area back 10,000 years ago. These well-crafted points have been
found in the vertebrae of mastodons and other extinct animals, proving that man
co-existed with these great beasts. Smith documents the history of the
discoveries and excavations of the Folsom Culture.
Amazingly, scientists
have found evidence that humans came just as much out of Iberia (the Spanish
peninsula), as they did Siberia!
It’s commonly taught that early man came across the Bering Strait from Siberia,
and then migrated down into present-day America. But the only other place on
the planet where the same sophisticated Folsom spear points can be found is in
Spain. So, the new rallying cry from whence early North American man came is,
“Iberia, not Siberia!” And the evidence
for this was discovered in
New Mexico.
Back to the present day,
Smith also details some of the Centennial events coming up in May 2012, in celebration
of New Mexico's 100th birthday. He describes the “Cattle
Drive of the Century,” where 100 longhorn cattle, branded with a Zia brand,
will be driven from Hobbs to Carlsbad. There will also be a Centennial Pony Express Ride from Hobbs
to Santa Fe. All New Mexicans are
invited to participate.
