Curator Frustrations

Sometimes you have to laugh or you'll cry.

Kimtern and I have been playing detective for a while with what we're calling our Y files.  As you may have seen, our Y files are our Found in Collection items:  artifacts with no numbers and no associated paperwork.  Every museum (ok, maybe not EVERY museum) has them.  While going through ours, Kimtern walked in with this:

I just laughed and laughed.

I mean, yes, this IS one piece of information we need:  the item is on loan.  But there is no other information.  No paperwork.  I'm sure whoever wrote that knew exactly from whom it was on loan, but they are not here anymore.  So, to whom does this belong?  When did it get here?  What is this a painting of?  We do have a couple clues to follow.

Can you tell what some of the clues might be?  There are two main ones here.

The signature is one.  However, we're not sure if the painting is supposed to be Santa Fe (doesn't look like it) or if he was from Santa Fe.  But we can look up his name and see what we find.  [a quick search doesn't show much]

The brand is our main clue at the moment.  It is the O U Diamond Tail from Clyde Browning's ranch. Clyde is in the Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame so that should make it easy, right?  Nope.  Clyde passed away before the Hall of Fame even became a thing so it was loaned by one of this family members...maybe...an assumption.  I have two Brownings in my database, but who is the rightful heir?  Are either of them related to Clyde?  So many questions.  Puzzles are fun but only if you solve them.

If you have any information about this painting, let us know!!
