2010 Festival of Quilts Exclusive

Have you ever thought about entering the Festival of Quilts at the Western Heritage Museum Complex and Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame but were hesitant because maybe you haven’t been quilting all that long? One of our entrants this year, Dijana van der Heide, is proof that you should enter anyway! Dijana has only been quilting for a year but entered four items into the show, two of which won ribbons, one being the first place ribbon for Best Representation of the Theme: Home on the Range. Dijana, originally from Lithuania, moved here three and a half years ago with her husband because of his job with Enrichment Technology US. They had the choice of moving to France or Hobbs and needless to say they chose Hobbs and they really have enjoyed being here. Dijana has crocheted before but never thought she could learn to quilt. She has been quilting now for a year and prefers to use her imagination rather than a pattern. It took Dijana three weeks to make the quilt which she titled “Lithuanian view on life on the Range” and she finished it on the day the quilts were being accepted for the show and good thing she did because it won first place in the Theme category!! When asked about the history of the quilt she said: “This is my Lithuanian idea about the western life on the range….Just one idea, I have a lot.” We cannot wait to see more of these ideas hopefully in next year’s show! We know that Dijana is not the only one with great ideas. We have two exhibits a year that are specifically for the community to enter: the Community Photography Show and the Festival of Quilts. No matter what your skill level, interests, or where you are from we want you to know that the Western Heritage Museum Complex and Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame is YOUR museum.
