An Introduction

I suppose before the real blogging begins I should give you some kind of introduction. My name is Erin and I am the Curator here at the Western Heritage Museum Complex and Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame located on the New Mexico Junior College campus in Hobbs, NM. In as few words as possible, at our Museum you can come see 12,000 years of human history in southeastern New Mexico, listen to an animatronic cowboy, learn about the inductees to the Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame, and much more.

Where oil, water, and cowboys do mix!

Our mission states: The Western Heritage Museum Complex is a multi-functional resource center dedicated to bringing people together, providing numerous educational experiences, and presenting the diversity of the cultural and natural histories of Southeastern New Mexico and the surrounding regions.

As a small museum with a full time staff of five people we all have to pitch in and help out in each area of the Museum. I, personally, love helping out and learning each aspect of museum work but my main job is to focus on the collections of the Museum. Like my job, this blog will focus mostly on the Museum's collections but may delve into other aspects of museum work including exhibits and education. Our Museum like many others do not have the space to exhibit every item they own. Because of this, I will be presenting a selection of objects from the Museum's collection each month. The main objective of this blog is to present objects to the public and to tie the importance of those objects to the southeastern region of New Mexico and its residents, past, present, and future.
